UNI ISO 45001:2018
Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems
With the UNI ISO 45001 standard, prevention policies are enhanced, and companies have an internationally recognized tool to effectively combat accidents and occupational illnesses.
The UNI ISO 45001:2018 standard, “Occupational health and safety management systems – Requirements with guidance for use,” is the first international standard that defines minimum good practice standards for the protection of workers worldwide.
It establishes a framework for improving safety, reducing workplace risks, and enhancing the health and well-being of workers.
This enables organizations that choose to certify their management system under accreditation to increase their health and safety performance.
Created to ensure consistency among various ISO standards for management systems, UNI ISO 45001 adopts the High-Level Structure (HLS) and introduces key innovations.
Risk based thinking
In the new risk-based approach, risk is defined as the "effect of uncertainty" and is comprehensively addressed. It can have both positive and negative implications, guiding the company to focus on both risks and opportunities for improving system performance.
The design of the management system must consider the organization's broader context, including logistical, urban, social, cultural, political, legal, and regulatory aspects of the market sector, among others. The analysis helps understand both internal and external factors that can influence system performance.
Top management must demonstrate strong commitment that permeates all levels of the chain of command.
The participation and consultation of workers, starting with Workers' Representatives for Safety (WRS), become central. These are essential tools for identifying hidden hazards and implementing prevention policies.
Procurement and contractors Purchasing and contracting activities are comprehensively regulated, distinguishing between suppliers of goods and services. This is because accidents often occur within the category of contractors or subcontractors. ISO 45001 is an international standard that specifies the requirements for an occupational health and safety management system, aiming to improve safety and preserve the health of both employees and external personnel, focusing on preventing illnesses and reducing workplace accidents.
This international standard is also based on the PDCA cycle (Plan-Do-Check-Act).
